HE NUI NGĀ PAINGA O TE HANGARUA MŌ TE TAIAO: There are many benefits of recycling for the environment

I have always felt a connection to the moana (ocean) and being in a community like Waiheke where we have such a special connection to our waters; I wanted to illustrate the beauty of our oceans paired with the concept of kaitiakitanga (guardianship) through the use of the whakataukī that is this work's title and central motif. This work employs many upcycled and unwanted materials that may have ultimately reached landfill or polluted our Moana. Also this work was created entirely by hand through hand embroidery, hand beading and hand sewing.

Koro Matene Star Sciascia is a textile and embroidery artist whose practice centers on intimacy, memory, and personal transformation.
