Rocky Redwood

There is a quiet, radical reverence in understanding that the ordinary is where the sacred hides. For Australia-based Rocky Redwood, potter and candle maker, creative practice is not a departure from daily life, but the very marrow of it. Rocky sees it as a continuous, alchemical loop where the earth’s energy is borrowed, transformed, and respectfully returned through clay, wax, and fire.

Growing up in New Zealand, Rocky’s creative practice began rurally outside Rotorua as a beekeeping student. Surviving a cold, misty winter in a volcanic valley with a dear friend, an older Danish landlord, a flock of white pigeons, and a dog, candle-making and pottery emerged as an ancient response to the human need for warmth and light.

For Rocky, creative pride isn't found in elite accolades, but in the cyclic rhythm of the everyday, like riding a bike to a menial job, making dinner, hanging out with her girlfriend and reading by lamplight. The ultimate achievement is spinning the mundanity of routine into physical objects of utility. By keeping the fire lit in the kiln and the home, the eternal flame of childhood burns on in every pot thrown and candle cast by Rocky.

"I am most proud of getting to make stuff for myself and others, always, always, always."
