Angela Winter Means
Angela Winter Means (GreatestFriend) is a textile creative whose practice navigates metaphysical insight and questions the complex weave that is human connection. Her studio methodology is grounded in quiet awareness, anchored by daily moments like holding her daughter’s hand. The Waitaki River, its rocks and stones, shifting sunlight, its powerul force and sound bouy her enduring creative reservoir, carrying memories of barefoot childhood days that inspire her tactile work. Her creative journey follows a non-linear path from early fashion dreams to over a decade spent rebuilding her identity within the experimental music scene in both San Francisco & then New York, shaping an intuitive process guided by ancient traditions rather than systematic rules.
Means works with natural fibers and antique garments to craft cohesive collections and one off pieces for home. Her visual palette is deeply inspired by nature’s raw forms and matā tūhua (obsidian), an elemental stone that reflects both sharp resilience and grounding protection. Drawing inspiration from the natural world and the underground experimental music networks that still hold her, Means uses textiles to express healing, biological wonder, and the many archetypes that reveal from human spirit.
"I am drawn to natural fibers, us being one, and with papatuanuku first. I take inspiration from the ancients, I am completely aware that I am a symbolic circle rather than a systematic square."
