Kenrick Smith
Kenrick Smith is a New Zealand-based Land Artist known for large-scale sand art and temporary, nature-based works. What began as a personal search for calm during the 2020 lockdown, drawing meditative patterns in the sand, has grown into a multidisciplinary exploration of impermanence and mindfulness.
Using materials like sand, grass, and charcoal, Kenrick creates site-specific artworks designed to be reclaimed by the elements. His process is a form of moving meditation, using nature as a canvas to tell visual stories that spark curiosity and connection. From massive 30m mandalas to community workshops, his work invites others to experience the freedom of creating art that isn't meant to last, but to be felt in the moment.
"We are constantly trying to fit more things into our lives but what I have come to learn is that we need to give more space so we can be more mindful with our time.
My journey into sand art has shown me that really working with the natural elements helps me practice mindfulness. Listening to nature and planning my time around the tides and weather keeps me present."
