Petra S Axelsson is a Waiheke-based fine art photographer whose work is defined by a deep fascination with contrast and the life found within shadows. Born in the north of Sweden, her journey began at a young age, introduced to the art by her father and learning the alchemy of the darkroom from scratch. This foundational experience with film photography sparked a lifelong obsession with black and white imagery. Having travelled to over 60 countries as an international destination wedding photographer, Petra now focuses her lens on the subtle, fleeting moments that others might miss. For her, the interplay of light and dark is a language of its own; she invites viewers to see the "colours" within a shadow, reminding us that the world’s beauty exists not in binaries of black and white, but in the richness of everything in between.
