Koro Sciascia

Koro Matene Star Sciascia is a textile and embroidery artist whose practice centers on intimacy, memory, and personal transformation. Sciascia's studio methodology is built around the quiet, intentional rhythm of hand stitching, turning ordinary acts like mending garments into meaningful artistic gestures. With inspiration and creative training taking place at Nana’s home in Havelock North, Sciascia learned to channel energy through needlework while observing the painstaking detail of hand-sewn quilts. From embroidering medical slings during lockdowns to altering worn clothing into expressive garments, Sciascia's process relies on tactile experimentation and slow craftsmanship.

Sciascia approaches the medium as a tool for emotional release, narrative storytelling, and honoring lineage. A rich sensory world connects deeply to home and a rose garden, incorporating an ancestral altar alongside vibrant floral spaces that recall childhood memories. Exploring themes of balance, light, and shadow, Sciascia aligns artistic identity with fire, an element capable of both providing warmth and burning. Through eclectic, hand-stitched creations, Sciascia invites viewers to embrace dualities, acknowledge life’s subtle shadows, and remain fully present in moments of care.

"Sitting and hand stitching with intention turns a seemingly banal moment into something deeply meaningful, honoring both the craft passed down to me and the dualities of life."
